The Level 2 Diploma in Photography was not quite what I was expecting, but I also didn't know what to expect???
I really enjoyed doing the course as I did learn so much about the world of photography, the beginnings of photography and the brilliant photographers from the past and present. The practical side to photography was extremely interesting to me.....
The film I had just finished went into an envelope, posted to the processors and they sent back the photos I had taken, or I dropped them into Boots and picked up the results when they were ready... I had absolutely no idea what my film would endure once it was at the processors....
My eyes were well and truly opened to the processing my black and white film would go through... First it would be put into a black, light proof bag along with a small 'bucket' and lid, a spool, a spindle and a 'tin' opener. The tin opener is used to open the film canister to release the film from it's confines. It then gets wound onto the spool - this isn't as easy as you think...... Half an hour later I eventually got the film onto the spool after countless attempts.... The spool goes onto the spindle and pushed to the bottom - very easy - the spindle and spool go into the 'bucket' with the film at the bottom.... The bucket lid goes on next and you have to make sure it is on properly so no light can get in and ruin you precious work..
The film then goes through three different chemical baths for varying amounts of time before being left in a water bath.... Once the time is up for the water bath the water goes down the plughole. Now it is safe to remove the film from the bucket. Squeegy most of the water from the film and, if you have one, hang it up in the drier.......
